Fantastic antique French pewter wine jug with acorn lid and rose makers marks.
These jugs were traditionally used for red wine before glass became more widely used in the 20th century. The jug would have been filled directly from a barrel in the home cellar before being put on the dining table.
The use of pewter dates back at least 2,000 years to Roman times. Ancient pewter contained about 70 percent tin and 30 percent lead. Such pewter, also called black metal, darkened greatly with age, and the lead readily leached out in contact with acidic foods. It is not recommended to use these jugs for drinking today.
