"Au Depart" was founded in Paris in 1834 opening their first store on rue Denain, close to the main entrance to Gard du Nord train station.
Considered to be one of the four great French trunkmakers alongside Louis Vuitton(est 1854), Moynat(est 1849) and Goyard(est 1853), luggage suppliers to the burgeoning rail and steam liner travel market.
In 1958 Au depart and Moynat companies merged and became "Moynat Au Depart". In 1978 the company ceased trading. The Moynat & Au Depart brands were relaunched by Bernard Arnault, Moynat in 2011 and Au Depart in April 2019 at the Milan Design Week in Italy, with an installation of old trunks from the Au Depart historical archive and the introduction of new trunks.
Because the rue Denain branch closed in 1905 and this trunk's label still references it, as well as the patterned lining, dates this trunk as pre 1905.
