In France it is a Chauffe Plat which gives us the name Chafing Dish in English, the purpose is to keep pre-prepared food warm until it's time to eat.
A lovely example in polished copper with ornate brass feet and handles.
Place two small oil burners or tea candles in the recesses, pop the lid on then the plates of food, finish up in the kitchen and eat when you are ready.
